The Romans are back in town
At Segedunum
it's not difficult to picture a Roman soldier standing on the same spot you are standing, even if today you are surrounded by a modern urban landscape. That curve in the River Tyne you can see from the fort ruins, was there when the Roman soldier stood in your place. It's not difficult to imagine Maximus and his friends gambling, gossiping and relaxing on their off duty days as you step into the full scale replica of a Roman Bath house, and it's not difficult to imagine the lack of personal privacy when you step inside the Roman Bath house toilet facilities!
So what is different between you and those Roman soldiers of so very long ago? You have the advantage of a modern observation tower to enjoy a high level view over the entire fort site. You can sit and watch the centuries roll by on screen, showing that there is so much more to the history of Segedunum than just the Roman story.
Who put the “great” in the Great North Museum
? Hadrian’s Wall doesn’t come much easier as it does in this warm, dry, indoor setting. “Meet” the people who made the Wall, who manned the Wall, who lived along the Wall. Feel a shiver run down your spine as the Roman God Mithras tries to recruit you into his world of darkness and initiation rites.
