Our region showcases some of Britain’s most creative and inspiring gardens, from the landscaped grounds of Gibside to the 21st century boldness of The Alnwick Garden from the Duchess of Northumberland. Enhance the experience further with green fingered experts, including the Duchess herself, to reveal their secrets of success.
Acclaimed as one of the best contemporary gardens in the world, The Alnwick Garden set in 12 fabulous acres is a favourite with visitors to the region and attracts garden enthusiasts and non gardeners alike.
The breathtaking Grand Cascade, the largest water feature of its kind in Britain, forms the centrepiece of The Garden with 7,260 gallons of water per minute tumbling down it at peak flow. Visitors can explore the Bamboo Labyrinth; kick off their shoes and while away the hours as they escape from it all amidst the beautiful surrounds – or explore one of the world’s largest tree houses.
The Rose Garden contains over 3,000 rose bushes include the ‘Alnwick Rose’ that was launched at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2001 and there is also a Poison Garden that, behind the locked gates, contains some of the most deadly plants in the world. VIP tours may be lucky enough to hear the Duchess of Northumberland explain her vision that led to the creation of one of the most beautiful public gardens in Europe. A 5 minute stroll leads you into the historical town centre. In summer the marketplace plays host to an International Festival of Music, Song and Dance and The Alnwick Fair – a costumed re-enactment of a medieval fair.
